9/11 – Never Forget

9/11 – I was teaching 3rd grade when the Towers were struck, my kids were in PE and I was listening on a radio in the Admin Offices…it was eerie, not real, then the Principal made an announcement, and I had to explain to scared 8 and 9 year olds what was happening. We were right by Lackland Air Force base and many of my students had parents in the military. We went back to work as usual after a quick prayer. It was definitely a life changing moment, and one that seemed too normal till I got home that night and watched the footage, over and over again.

The next day it took hours to get to school I think I had 8 of my 25 students show up. When school resumed as normal I took the kids out to the playground as we were lining up to go inside a large transport plane flew overhead on its way to Lackland, the children were terrified. When the sound had passed I assured them we didn’t have to be afraid and a little girl in my class quoted, 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” I was amazed at her clarity of mind and I often thought back to that moment, when I too was afraid.
